Katie

Katie Haberman has a long history of working internationally and with immigrants and refugees in her home state of California. She holds a degree in International Development Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and studied abroad in Cuzco, Peru where she joined a team to perform small-scale development projects in the high Andes. After graduating college, Katie has had varied experiences, including working as a counselor for at-risk youth in the Bay Area, working on a team with the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant in Berkeley assisting refugees who are applying for asylum, as well as organizing a neighborhood in the Mission District of San Francisco around community issues. In addition, Katie has assisted San Francisco renters to assert their rights with the Housing Rights Committee of SF, and acted as a family advocate at a low-income preschool in East Oakland. Katie has held the position of Country Coordinator in Belize for the non-profit, Peacework, where she coordinated projects on the ground with principals, community leaders and groups from abroad.

In her travels, she has continued to pursue her passion of photography exhibiting her work in cafés around the Bay Area. She believes in the power of story and listening to connect people across all lines. She envisions a story project for all the people the Extra Mile will attract in order to give everyone a chance to be heard and understood and to contribute stories. Katie also has a strong affinity for animals and an aversion to buttons.
